Asphalt Flower – Beijing Embassy 2023

Since 2019, the facade of the Brazilian Embassy in Beijing has been the stage for open-air exhibitions, opening a new channel for the dissemination of Brazilian culture in China. In  January 2024, as part of the celebrations of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Brazil and the People’s Republic of China, the exhibition “Asphalt Flower” by Brazilian artist Claudia Jaguaribe was opened.

There are 12 banners, 9 horizontal banners (2x3m), 2 vertical banners (9x5m) and 1 vertical banner (5x3m). The exhibition is composed of images from the series Asphalt Flower, which also includes the book Asphalt Flower by Éditions Bessard with curatorial text by Marc Pottier.

The exhibition will remain on view for a year.

Asphalt Flower – Beijing Embassy 2023

Claudia Jaguaribe likes to play with the representation of reality. Often, she cuts out and reassembles her photographs, constructing new formats and never hesitates to bring the improbable together.

She has long believed that gardens best express what connects Humans and Nature. She sees them as an iconic place of the cycles of life – growth, flowering and decline – and as a reflection of the societies that shape them. Her photographic composition is between the idea of the ruin of a world that seems to be heading towards a natural disaster and a future to which she always lends a force of resistance and resilience.
